Enlighting Ioannina

Luminous festival in Ioannina,that i had mensioned in a previous article, is a great exampe how art can transform and reenforce the tourism in a whole city.

CENTRAL SQUARE OF IOANNINA – CHRISTMAS TREE | ARTIST: GIORGOS KEVREKIDIS [CHALKIDA,GREECE]

The source of inspiration for the creation of the Christmas tree was the basic geometrical morphology of a typical Christmas tree forming an isosceles triangle as well as similar triangular forms connected to Christmas as the traditional iron triangles used to perform the carols in Greece.
Moreover, as the artist explains, "my intention for the 3d work creation was to include in its design, except for the simplified minimalistic geometry, the idea of developing an organic form related to every phyla into the plant kingdom".
CASTLE – LIGHT INSTALLATION 

A total of 66 red and blue lights were installed on the Castle's wall creating a unique visual play that will highlight its historical and cultural value.





BANK OF GREECE – VIDEO MAPPING | ARTIST: PANAGIOTIS TOMARAS [GR/NL]

A video mapping projection on the Bank of Greece transformed the facade of the building for three whole days, creating a colorful spectacle in the heart of the city





MAVILI SQUARE - SCULPTURAL LIGHT INSTALLATION | TITLE: TUNNELWAVES | ARTIST: MISCHA DAAMS [NL]

Mischa Daams [NL] presented a sculptural light installation at Mavili Square. The light installation entitled "Tunnelwaves" was composed by three screens of 13 meters length forming two parallel narrow corridors|tunnels of 80 centimeters. The screens were created by glass cloth, a mirror like lightweight material that was easily removable by the wind. Audience had the ability to enter and walk through the corridors and participate in a playful interaction.
At night the play of reflections had been continued and intensified with the addition of colorful lighting.

CLOCK TOWER - ILLUMINATION | ARTIST: IOANNIS GEKAS - GEKAS SA

The Clock Tower of Ioannina that was built in 1905 constitutes a landmark in the heart of the city. This exceptional monument is a mixture of 3 architectural styles, neoclassic, oriental and Mediterranean, a combination that will be highlighted in the night urban environment through the use of light.
The intention of the lighting installation was to underline the special architectural elements as well as to add a festive touch to the Clock Tower due to the Christmas days. The intense contrast of light-shadow, warm-cool and the gentle color interchange attempted to give depth and texture to this unique city symbol.
Ioannis Gekas is a lighting designer, mechanical engineer with a master degree in Architectural Lighting Design of Bartlett School of Architecture/UCL London.
PEDESTRIAN ROAD OF KALLARI – PROJECTION | ARTIST: DANIEL BERIO [IT/UK]

A blind façade of a building located on the Pedestrian road of Kallari was covered with a projection created by Daniel Berio especially for the occasion.
OLYMPIA THEATER - 85 ANEXARTISIAS STR - ILLUMINATION - | ARTISTS: GRAAM - YIANNIS LOUKOS [GR]

The building located at 85, Anexartisias Street was built around 1870 so as to house "Olympia" theater, while it also later housed the Philharmonic Orchestra Conservatory [Kafodeio]. The aim of the artists was to activate this historical building with the use of light and sound. Chosen operettas mainly from the interwar period were customized through light sensors and were reproduced with the sponsorship of microprocessor. https://soundcloud.com/lookos/olympia-theatre
